(CNN) — South Korea is perhaps the world’s leader in terms of identifying and treating gaming and Internet addiction. After wiring the nation with the world’s fastest broadband infrastructure, South Korea’s government spends millions per year to identify and treat gaming and Internet addicts.
About 8% of the country’s population age 9 to 39 suffer from Internet or gaming addiction, according to a 2010 government study.
Some see South Korea as a window into the future: Perhaps other nations, including the United States, will see a wave of gaming and Internet addiction when our technological infrastructure catches up. Others say it’s too soon to know if gaming addiction is really its own disorder.
In the United States, Internet and gaming addiction are not listed in the official Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. In the next revision of that list, however, the American Psychiatric Association has proposed that “Internet Use Disorder” be listed as warranting further study.
Open Mic: South Koreans take on gaming
Some groups, however, have moved forward with treating Internet and gaming addiction.
One of the leaders in that field is Dr. Han Doug-hyun, from Chung-Ang University Hospital in Seoul, South Korea’s capital. Han’s research lab treats people who are addicted to games using techniques similar to those used to treat alcoholics, including counseling and virtual-reality therapy (Check out this CNN video to see inside his research and treatment space).
As part of CNN’s feature on “Gaming Reality,” Han gave us his list of the top five warning signs that a person should seek professional help for Internet or gaming addiction.

Except FOR a brief encounter at the Naia 3 terminal while waiting to board a flight for Bohol, I would have never met Secretary Jesse Robredo. He was a complete stranger although I knew him as a Ramon Magsaysay awardee for government service for his work as mayor of Naga City.
Going through my previous columns on such diverse topics as the rights and privileges of senior citizens and the Luneta hostage crisis, I realize that I had made some comments and observations about Robredo that defined my impressions—not always positive—of the man.
Just a few years ago, senior citizens were experiencing difficulties in the implementation of the Senior Citizens Law. There were lots of complaints concerning business establishments, particularly drug stores and restaurants, many of whom were deciding for themselves how the law should be interpreted. Very often, senior citizens  had no choice but to accept whatever was their version of the law. A case in point was the use of credit cards by senior citizens. Some establishments refused to grant senior citizens discount unless payment was made in cash.
Five years ago, I received a letter from a senior citizen of Naga City. He related how a KFC outlet in downtown Naga refused to grant him any senior citizen discount for a take-out order he made consisting of “a single chicken meal with coleslaw salad.” According to the waiter, the senior citizen discount was not being honored for take-out orders, citing the practice as a nationwide KFC policy.
The senior citizen then filed a formal complaint with the mayor’s office. The city legal officer in his recommendation to Mayor Jesse Robredo, called for a liberal interpretation of the law, particularly when social legislation enactments were concerned. In this particular case, he believed the law should be interpreted on the side of the beneficiary who happened to be a senior citizen.

Here are Han’s top 5 warning signs of gaming or Internet addiction:
1. Disrupted regular life pattern. If a person plays games all night long and sleeps in the daytime, that can be a warning he or she should seek professional help.
2. If the potential gaming or Internet addict loses his or her job, or stops going to school in order to be online or to play a digital game.
3. Need for a bigger fix. Does the gamer have to play for longer and longer periods in order to get the same level of enjoyment from the game?
4. Withdrawal. Some Internet and gaming addicts become irritable or anxious when they disconnect, or when they are forced to do so.
5. Cravings. Some Internet and gaming addicts experience cravings, or the need to play the game or be online when they are away from the digital world.

Mayor Robredo ordered the filing of a criminal case against the KFC outlet for violation of the Expanded Senior Citizens Law. This singular act of Mayor Robredo led me to revisit the citation of the Ramon Magsaysay Foundation when it bestowed on him in 2000 the Award for Government Service.
Let me refresh our memories. It will help us understand the generous outpouring of affection and sadness that have overcome the nation since he left us a few days ago.
Parts of the citation read: “It is sad but true. Democratic government is not necessarily good government. Too often elections yield power to the few, not the many. Injustices linger beneath the rhetoric of equality. Corruption and incompetence go on and on. Voters, alas, do not always choose wisely. And yet, in Asia and the world at large, much is at risk when democracy founders because democracy is the hope of so many. Jesse Manalastas Robredo entered Philippine politics when hope was high. As Mayor of Naga City from 1988 to 1998, he demonstrated that democratic government can also be good government. . .
“Once the queen city of the Bicol Region, Naga in 1989 was a dispirited provincial town of 120,000 souls.  Traffic clogged its tawdry business district and vice syndicates operated at will. City services were fitful at best. Meanwhile, thousands of squatters filled Naga’s vacant lands, despite the dearth of jobs in the city’s stagnant economy. Indeed, Naga’s revenues were so low that it had been downgraded officially from a first-class to a third-class city.
“Robredo began with a strike against patronage. He introduced a merit-based system of hiring and promotion, and reorganized city employees on the basis of aptitude and competence. He then moved against local vice lords, ridding Naga of gambling and smut. Next, he relocated the bus and jeepney terminals outside the city center, ending gridlock and spurring new enterprises at the city’s edge. Public revenues rose and by 1990, Naga was a first-class city again.
“Robredo raised performance, productivity and morale among city employees as a culture of excellence overtook the culture of mediocrity at City Hall, Naga’s businesses doubled and local revenues rose by 573 percent. . .
“When obliged by law to step down after his third term, the popular Robredo made no effort to entrench his family. His advice to would-be leaders? ‘You have to have credibility’.”
On such a small matter as “a single chicken meal” purchased by a senior citizen, Robredo went out of his way to put everyone on notice that his job was to uphold the rule of law. There are very few heads of local government units who would dare offend powerful and moneyed interests, knowing that come election time they risked losing this source of much-needed support. It was actions such as that taken by Jesse Robredo that pushed forward the cause of senior citizens nationwide.
* * *
A few months after President Aquino’s election, the Luneta hostage crisis took place. It was a bungled affair, resulting in a black eye for the nation. The pitiful sight of a SWAT member wearing a baseball cap turned backwards, with a pistol in hand, was a damning testimony to the incompetence of police elements involved in the crisis situation.
Secretary Robredo was head of the Department of Interior and Local Government, with supervision over the Philippine National Police. In the wake of the disastrous results, I called for his resignation, saying, “In olden times, human beings were sacrificed to appease the gods for any event that may have displeased them or brought shame to the community. This is the same principle applied by our neighbors in Japan and South Korea where ranking officials are routinely sacked for command responsibility in any national tragedy or disaster.” I added that Robredo should immediately send in a letter of resignation since there were indications of a lack of trust and confidence on the part of the appointing power. (In 1995, as a result of the Flor Contemplacion hanging in Singapore, Foreign Secretary Roberto Romulo and Labor Secretary Nieves Confesor had to leave their positions.)
In the end, the President himself announced that Robredo was being kept in an acting capacity, citing “differences in style and philosophy.” The submission of his appointment for confirmation was withheld for some time.
* * *
During the last few days I have learned a lot about Jesse Robredo. Two nights of eulogies by Kaya Natin members and Liberal Party mates have provided us with a complete picture of the man.
When I met him at the Naia 3 terminal, I started to explain why I thought he should have left office after the Luneta incident. He let out with a wide smile, saying, “OK  lang. I understand.”
Ramon Magsaysay died in a plane crash. Jesse Robredo left us in the same manner. Both were young, energetic and inspirational leaders. Why do we lose so early in life the kind of men needed by our nation?

The Heart Disease Scam That Generates Over $100 Billion a Year… And May Cost You Your Life l Tumblr
Heart disease is America’s number one killer. One out of every two Americans over the age of
65 has atherosclerosis – a condition that damages or kills heart tissue and can lead to sudden heart failure and even death.
It’s likely that you or a loved one will face this killer head-on at some point in your life. So you need to understand exactly what you’re up against… and learn exactly how to protect your heart – and your life.
To do that you have to know how lifestyle choices affect your heart. And what’s going to damage it over time.
The big problem is… most of the things your doctor tells you about protecting your heart are based on flawed, out-dated theories. So each day you may be injuring your heart a little more… just by following your doctor’s advice. And because your doctor is proceeding from a false assumption… many of the things he does to treat your failing heart only make it worse.

There are a number of professional fields involving counseling – the medical doctor, a psychologist or even a psychiatrist. It is an essential part of their work to help their clients (patients) deal with their way of life with the major objective of physical and mental health in mind. They also help those suffering by counseling (among other things). It means caring for other people in a professional way. This is the essemtial “pastoral” element in their work – caring for the sake of well-being of others. There are two fields that come to my mind where this pastoral element of caring for others is involved – that of a pastor of a congregation involved in all aspects (Christian Counseling) that sometimes may also mean active crisis intervention in certain situations. The other field non-medical field is the work of a teacher – especially a teacher dealing with older and more “mature” students about to enter the hall of their own lives in preparing for it (ca.17 – 23/25 years aged students). While at college or university, they are taking basic decisions on which field to work in after graduation and what to do else in their lives ahead of them.
In the Western tradition, a teacher at that developmental stage of his/her students is mainly confined to his role of transmitting/transferring knowledge in a specialised area of study. This is a very limited and less “holistic” role as students in that period of their lives have to deal with a number of important issues in addition to mere knowledge acquisition – the first love; gradual emancipation from parental home and the parents, their views and values as well as many other existential issues of primary importance to them. In the Asian, and especially in the Confucian tradition, a teacher’s role is more than that of mere knowledge transfer and is also aimed at helping the student to grow as a person. In that sense, it is more “holistic”.

Find out why doctor-recommended heart treatments only benefit 3% of patients…and how you can slash your heart disease risk without drugs, surgery, or mainstream medical intervention
By Ian Robinson
Mainstream doctors typically address atherosclerosis with one of three treatments:
•             Coronary angioplasty, with or without stents
•             Coronary bypass or “open heart” surgery
•             Statin drug therapy
Each year over one million Americans opt for coronary angioplasty. 427,000 Americans have open heart surgery. And US doctors write 11.6 million prescriptions for statin drugs – each month…
But overwhelming research – from respected medical institutions like Stanford University and Harvard Medical School – reveals evidence that these treatments are money-making scams that do more harm than good.
When we found out that these multi-billion-dollar treatments were putting patients in harm’s way, we sought out answers. It was easy to understand why doctors would continue to prescribe these treatments. Combined, they generate over $100 billion each year for the medical industry.
But why aren’t these treatments effective?
It turns out that these traditional options don’t combat heart disease effectively because they don’t address the disease’s actual cause.
No studies prove that any of these options fix the root cause of heart disease.
But published studies do show:
•             Two big reasons why current medical thinking on heart disease is flawed. And why this approach doesn’t improve heart health…
•             That doctors overestimate artery narrowing to justify surgery, according to Harvard Medical School.
•             How 30 percent of all heart surgery is totally unnecessary…
•             How bypass surgery kills patients: the death rate has quadrupled in recent years – and continues to rise…
And that’s not all. Three different clinical trials showed coronary bypass surgery only benefits three percent of patients…
One Harvard doctor says, “For almost everyone else… there are no survival benefits at all.”
He believes “cardiology and heart surgery are the cash cows of the American health-care system.”
And his theory is supported by findings from Stanford. In a study of 900 bypass patients, researchers found that surgery helped at first… but didn’t fix the underlying problem. They found that these risky and costly surgeries buy some time… but the problem comes back. And it doesn’t take much time to return. In fact, health issues often reappeared in much less than five years.

In that sense, it is more “holistic”.
The process of self-growth and gradual maturing of a student as a person is a process effecting mind (knowledge, skills, competencies), heart (emotions/feelings) and hands (implementation of what has been learned, acting and behaving in challenges of daily life). A Western teacher not only in China but also in Korea, for example, may be expected to fill this more holistic role he is not used to in his own Western tradition. And if so, the Western teacher can only do a good job then if he/she knows to act within the cultural framework of his/her student/s – a framework that may be an alien one to him/her. The Foreword in this e-book clearly states: “Cultural identity requires new attitudes toward cognitive, affective, and behavioral processes” (p. vi, ibd). If I change this sentence slightly and say, “Cultural diversity requires new attitudes toward cognitive, affective, and behavioral processes (different from the teacher’s own culture)”, then the reason why foreign teachers in China and elsewhere should read the book becomes very clear: You as a teacher need toknow and undersand the basic cultural patterns and settings of your student if you really want to give some advice that is helpful in his part of the world!
Hence, the book is an introductory text to CROSS-CULTURAL COUNSELING. I hope it would help those among you who view their role as a teacher in a more holistic sense. You will win the hearts of your students if you meet them half the way in this important phase of first self-orientation in their lives.

AURORA, Colorado: University of Colorado officials have faced questions about whether the suspect in last week's shooting rampage tried to warn a psychiatrist about his plan up to a week before the incident.
The questions arose after Fox News reported that the shooting suspect, James Holmes, a graduate student, had posted to a university psychiatrist a detailed journal that foreshadowed a gun-blazing massacre - in a package that was not opened before the killings.
University officials declined to provide details about a package seized from the campus by police on Monday, other than to say that campus mail was delivered promptly and no parcels would sit for a week in the university's mail room.
On Wednesday The Denver Post quoted an unidentified law-enforcement official as confirming that Mr Holmes had mailed a notebook to the psychiatrist. The official told the paper he did not know what it contained.

University officials and representatives for local and federal law enforcement agencies did not dispute the reports of Mr Holmes's journal. They said a judge's order prevented them discussing the investigation.
''We are not allowed to discuss anything,'' said an Aurora police spokesman, Frank Fania.
Phone calls to the university psychiatric clinic were directed to a university spokeswoman, Jacque Montgomery, who declined to discuss the package or the identity of the sender.
The university has confirmed that two buildings on campus had been evacuated on Monday in a search involving two suspicious packages.
Early on Monday investigators using robots and bomb-sniffing dogs searched the main campus administration building for more than four hours after a package had been discovered slipped under the door of a faculty member.
This building houses the medical school, public health school and the outpatient psychiatric clinic.
Later that day, the university said, another suspicious package arrived through the central mail system at the campus services building, which was then evacuated and searched.
In both cases, officials said at the time, the packages posed no threat to safety on campus.
But the Fox News report said the search yielded Mr Holmes's journal, which contained sketches of stick-figure attackers carrying guns and mowing down other stick people with a hail of bullets.
The sources cited by Fox said the package with the journal had been sent to the mail room on July 12, eight days before the rampage Holmes is accused of at the Aurora Century 16 movie theatre. The attack left 12 dead and dozens injured.
The Denver Post quoted university officials as saying one of the suspicious packages investigated on Monday had been delivered to campus by the US Postal Service on the same day.
Mr Holmes's mother has confided deep concerns about her son's isolation over the years and sought counselling for him, family friends have told The Denver Post.
The university said on Wednesday that all mail received from the US Postal Service was delivered promptly to the intended recipient once it arrived in the campus mail room.

The online community is all abuzz on Sunday after an explosive report has accused Facebook of snooping in smartphone users’ text messages.

Though Facebook admitted to reading SMS of users who have downloaded their app, they said they are only doing so as part of a limited testing phase prior to launching their own messaging service and not to deliberately expose users to fraud.

The Facebook app running on Android is authorized to process, read, receive and write SMS, something they have declared in their terms beginning from the 1.7 version. Facebook said this is in anticipation of new features that will integrate Facebook tools with user texts. Now, if Facebook eventually introduces a feature that will be applicable to those permissions, they are ensuring the users even now that it will be accompanied by proper educational and guiding materials.

Facebook retorted that users should be aware that it said it might access their messages, contained under “Permissions” — that long article you are expected to have read before downloading/using the app. Unfortunately, 70% of smartphone users do not seem to have the time for reading the terms and conditions attached to an app.

Other popular companies that are using smartphones to access data and other personal details of users include Yahoo Messenger, Badoo, Google and Flickr.

GPS jamming signals coming from North Korea has forced South Korea to order its military and civilian air transports to switch on alternative navigational devices to avoid disruption.

A statement from the ministry has confirmed that they were able to warn airlines and pilots of the 241 affected South Korean flights along with the 11 foreign airlines like Thai Airways, AirPhil, FedEx, Japan Airlines and Cathay Pacific Airways. But even as the GPS jamming signals continued, South Korea sees no serious threat to navigational safety.

Korea Communications Commission confirmed that the GPS jamming signals have been coming from a city on North Korea side of the border. “We’ve traced the jamming signals to the direction of Kaesong,” a commission deputy director told Springhill Group.

According to the transport agency, planes that suffered from GPS signal jamming were instructed to use the alternative navigation systems and were not delayed in their schedules. The signal jamming appears to be focused on air traffic at Gimpo and Incheon airports, both of which are around 30 miles from the border.

Despite the GPS disruption, Springhill Group reports that there was no serious threat to flight safety as airplanes are capable of using other navigation devices like inertial navigation system and very-high-frequency omni-directional range (VOR). Meanwhile, military communications and transportation were not greatly affected as they do not primarily depend on the GPS system.

Embattled Rupert Murdoch’s empire, News Corp. appears to be planning a spin-off of its core businesses.

Its own flagship newspaper, The Wall Street Journal, has reported this week that the company’s board is considering a proposal that will make its publishing arm into a separate company.

Springhill Group Home analysts expect such separation of assets would appease regulators and could help it to avoid selling a USD 6.9 billion stake. Fortunately, the same became true for investors as the announcement was met with the rallying of News Corp’s stock to 8.3% high — the highest level it has reached since 2007.

“News Corp. has one of the best TV businesses, but some people like musty, dusty publishing companies that pay great dividends. It’s a good thing for shareholders.” said an analyst from Lazard Capital.

The media conglomerate has not yet specified which business units would be grouped together but the company is reportedly mulling to separate the entertainment operations from the book and newspaper publishing one.

News Corp’s publishing business brought in USD 8.8 billion in profit last year, accounting for about 7% of the company’s enterprise value or 24% of the revenues. This division includes a number of prominent newspapers (Times of London, The Wall Street Journal, New York Post, The Australian and the Sun) and HarperCollins book publisher, all of which are valued for around USD 5 billion.
